WIN FOR FARMERS: Harder & Allies Defeat Proposed Tax Hike on Family Farms in the House
After a months-long campaign by Rep. Harder, the House of Representatives recommends keeping inheritance protection for family farms
WASHINGTON — Today, Representative Josh Harder (CA-10) celebrated a win for Central Valley farmers after the House Ways and Means Committee completed their markup of the reconciliation bill without a repeal of the stepped-up basis. The stepped-up basis protection ensures family farms don't have to liquidate their farms or sell of parts of their land in order to afford the transition between one generation and the next. In May, Rep. Harder led a letter standing up to House Democratic leadership in order to keep the tax protection in place. As Congress writes the budget reconciliation bill, Rep. Harder has been a vocal advocate against any tax increases on working families, especially Valley farmers.
"Valley farms belong in the hands of Valley families," said Rep. Harder. "For months I've been explaining to anyone who would listen that raising taxes on our family farms is a terrible idea. I'm happy to say that today we won the fight in the House. The last thing our community needs is higher taxes or worrying about closing their family farm. Today is a good day for the Valley."
