VIDEO: Harder Warns Families of New Scams Using AI Technology
Fraud is skyrocketing and more than doubled over the last two years – Americans lost a record $8.8 billion to fraud in 2022
Thanks to artificial intelligence, scams are getting harder to detect
WASHINGTON – Today, Representative Josh Harder (CA-9) released a public service announcement video warning San Joaquin County families about the recent rise in scams utilizing AI. Rep. Harder’s legislation, the Artificial Intelligence Accountability Act, would ensure AI is not used for illegal activity like scams.

Hey folks, Congressman Josh Harder here.
The holidays are a great time to spend with family, but it’s also when scammers are the most aggressive.
Fraud has been skyrocketing. Americans lost a record $8 billion to scammers just last year.
With the help of AI tools, these scams are getting even more difficult to spot – including using AI-generated voices to impersonate loved ones and creating realistic-looking scam websites.
I’m working with Congress to hold tech companies accountable and make sure AI isn't used for criminal activity like that, but the best thing we can do right now is to protect ourselves and our families by taking just a few simple steps to avoid scams.
First, never give your personal or financial information to anyone if something feels off or unexpected.
Second, be cautious of clicking on links. Big package delivery texts are a major scam going on right now.
And third, resist the pressure to act right away. Scammers use tactics to make you emotional and upset so your guard is down.
If someone insists you can only pay with cryptocurrency, a wire transfer service, or a gift card, that's a big red flag.
When in doubt, talk to somebody you trust before taking action. If you think you've been the victim of a scam, reach out to our local law enforcement immediately.
I'm wishing you all a safe and wonderful holiday season. Thank you.
