Harder Torches Government Bureaucrats in Reaction to New Report on Impacts of Building Delta Tunnel Project

December 28, 2022

The government’s new EIS report clearly shows the Delta Tunnel project will have significant impacts on the Central Valley’s water supply, air quality, and environment

Despite widespread public outcry over the proposed project, government officials plan to hold no in-person public hearings on the subject

WASHINGTON — Today, Representative Josh Harder released the following statement in reaction to the Army Corps of Engineers’ newly released 700 page draft Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for the Delta Conveyance Project, also known as the Delta Tunnel.

The report finds that building the Delta Tunnel project may have significant negative impacts on the Central Valley’s agricultural resources including its water supply, air quality, endangered species, essential fish habitat, and environmental justice outlook. Additionally, the Army Corps of Engineers has failed to schedule even one single in-person public hearing on the Delta Tunnel project.

“Building the Delta Tunnel will crush our farmers, endanger our environment, and put our whole community at risk. I refuse to let that happen. Everyone in the Valley knows the Delta Tunnel is a terrible idea and a greedy water grab. Now, we have a report that makes those facts clear as day,” said Rep. Harder. “The Army Corps of Engineers’ refusal to host a single in-person public hearing on this project is an embarrassment and a disservice to everyone in our community. Six weeks of public comment on a project that will impact us for hundreds of years is unacceptable and another demonstration of Sacramento putting itself first and the Valley last. Today, I’m calling on the Army Corps to reverse its decision and hold a real, in-person public hearing before the end of January so they can hear directly from Valley farmers and families about what this disastrous project would mean to all of us.”

Rep. Harder’s office will be following this press release with additional announcements and actions in opposition to the Delta Tunnel project in the coming days and weeks. This comes on the heels of Rep. Harder’s new bill, the Stop the Delta Tunnel Act, which would stop the project’s construction once and for all.
