Harder Statement on SB1 Veto

September 28, 2019

Modesto, CA – Representative Josh Harder (CA-10) released the following statement after Governor Gavin Newsom vetoed SB1.

"It's too bad the State Senate didn't make the amendments to SB1 that we recommended a couple weeks back. California missed an opportunity to strengthen an otherwise important bill. I applaud the governor's commitment to listening to the needs of Central Valley water users. The bill was aimed at protecting our air and water quality – which are goals we all share – but, as written, it would have jeopardized our state's only path forward on water use. Now more than ever we need to get back to the negotiating table and find a real solution that works for all of us.

"The voluntary settlement process is our best option for ensuring our farmers have the water they need to protect their livelihoods and feed the world while also protecting vulnerable fish and wildlife. I hope the California Legislature will take another shot at drafting legislation that helps us achieve those goals without threatening voluntary settlement agreements."
