Day Two: Rep. Josh Harder Co-Sponsors Sweeping Reform Legislation

January 15, 2019

Washington DC—Today, Representative Josh Harder (CA-10) became a co-sponsor to H.R. 1, known as "For the People Act." This is the first piece of major legislation undertaken by the new Congress, and it is Rep. Harder's first step in keeping his promise to fight the corrupting influence of dark money, strengthen voting rights, and instill stronger codes of ethical conduct in Congress.

The For the People Act accomplishes the following:

  • It Reforms Campaign Finance by requiring Super PACs and other dark money organizations to disclose their donors, and establishes a public matching system for citizen-owned elections.

  • It Strengthens Ethics Laws by expanding conflict-of-interest rules, closes loopholes on lobbyists and foreign agents, and institutes tougher standards on members of Congress serving on boards and working as lobbyists.

  • It Makes Voting Easier by instituting automatic voter registration, modernizes election protection rules, and takes aim at reversing partisan re-districting.

Upon co-sponsoring H.R. 1, Rep. Josh Harder released the following statement:

"There are a lot of issues we need to tackle in the new Congress, but year after year the corrupting influence of big money in politics has been the single biggest obstacle to getting things done. The bill I've co-sponsored is ambitious, but it's what the moment calls for. It's what the Central Valley deserves. Because at the end of the day, our democracy should be open to every American."
