After Harder’s Calls, White House Invokes Defense Production Act for Infant Formula & Ramps Up Formula Imports

May 19, 2022

Harder called for use of the Defense Production Act and increased imports from Europe nearly a week ago

WASHINGTON – Today, Representative Josh Harder released the following statement on the White House’s recent announcement invoking the Defense Production Act to address the nationwide infant formula shortage and launching “Operation Fly Formula” to speed formula imports from abroad. Rep. Harder called on the White House to take these two critical steps late last week. Last night, with Rep. Harder’s backing, the House passed $28 million in emergency funding to address the formula shortage.

Rep. Harder and his wife, Pam, recently welcomed their baby daughter Lily into the world. This month, like so many families in the Valley, they joined a waitlist after failing to find baby formula available for purchase.

“I’m glad to see the White House taking these critical steps to address the infant formula shortage,” said Rep. Harder. “Invoking the  Defense Production Act and launching Operation Fly Formula are the right things to do to address this crisis. Now, let’s get formula back on shelves ASAP and hold these companies accountable so this can never happen again.”
