Deadline Extended for Card Submissions to September 6th

Modesto, CA – Representative Josh Harder (CA-10) is thanking residents of the Central Valley who took the time to make or send birthday cards to Tom Dimperio, a WWII Veteran from Modesto who turned 100 years old on August 18th. Schools, churches, veterans’ groups, and hundreds of everyday citizens sent cards to honor former Staff Sergeant Dimperio, who earned three Purple Hearts and a Bronze Star for his service during World War Two. Rep. Harder is working with the family on a birthday celebration in which the surprise birthday cards will be delivered to Mr. Dimperio.

Cards Collected by Rep. Harder’s Office

“Our community is full of folks with big hearts who love and support our veterans. A small gesture from so many people amounts to one big, special celebration for Tom,” said Rep. Harder. “I want to thank everyone from the bottom of my heart for taking the time to honor a real-life hero from the Central Valley.”

“Thank you to all who have participated in recognizing my great uncle’s birthday,” said Dimperio’s great-nephew, Jason Rose, who approached Rep. Harder’s office. “What an amazing community we live in to honor a very special man who has served his community, family, and this wonderful country we live in so that we can have freedom. God Bless the USA!!”

Army Staff Sergeant Tom Dimperio of Modesto went to Camp Gruber, Oklahoma in 1942 for basic training and was ultimately assigned to the 88th Infantry Division. He continued training in North Africa and was sent to Naples, Italy in 1944. Dimperio was injured twice during the war – first when a mortar shell exploded near him, shooting pieces of shrapnel throughout his body. He was injured a second time in Northern Italy, where he was struck by Nazi machine gun fire and artillery shrapnel.

Dimperio resided in Modesto most of his life but currently lives in a Veteran’s facility in Menlo Park. His wife, Genevieve, is still a resident of Modesto.

Rep. Harder is taking several additional steps to ensure Mr. Dimperio’s 100th birthday is special. Rep. Harder has reached out to the White House to request a special Presidential Greeting. Rep. Harder also arranged to have a flag flown over the United States Capitol on Dimperio’s birthday in his honor. Rep. Harder is working with Jason Rose, Mr. Dimperio’s great-nephew, to arrange other special commemorations, including a birthday celebration in September.
