President Biden Endorses Harder Push for a Gas Tax Holiday

June 22, 2022

Harder’s Gas Price Relief Act of 2022 would suspend the federal gas tax and save Valley drivers 18.4 cents per gallon

WASHINGTON – Today, Representative Josh Harder released the following statement after President Biden endorsed his push for a three- month gas tax suspension:

“Our families just can’t afford to keep paying record high prices at the pump. I’ve been pushing the White House to find some common sense and join me in pushing to suspend the gas tax for months, and I’m glad they’ve finally come on board,” said Rep. Harder. “Now it’s time pass my bill, suspend the gas tax, and get these prices down. We can’t wait any longer.”

President Biden’s support for a short-term suspension of the federal gas tax builds momentum for Rep. Harder’s Gas Price Relief Act of 2022 which would suspend the federal gas tax by creating a federal gas tax ‘holiday.’ Valley drivers are paying an average of $6.30 per gallon today, more than $2 per gallon more than this time last year, according to AAA.

For months, Rep. Harder has been leading the charge on the state and federal level to lower the price of gas. In his December op-ed in Fox BusinessI'm a Democrat and it's time for our government to stop making gas more expensive, Harder called on politicians to pause their gas taxes as families struggle to pay all-time high prices at the pump. Soon after Rep. Harder's push, Governor Newsom announced a proposal for a gas tax ‘holiday' which would save California families $523 million this year.
