NEWS: Harder Introduces Bipartisan Bill to Fix Unfair Law Harming Wildland Firefighters and Their Families
WASHINGTON – Today, Representative Josh Harder (CA-9) introduced a bipartisan bill to support wildland firefighters and fix an unfair policy that penalizes firefighters for taking off more than three days – even for family emergencies or illness. The current policy has contributed to the severe wildland firefighter shortage and this fix is an important piece of a broader wildfire solution.
Under current law, wildland firefighters lose their retirement benefits if they take more than three days off, no matter why they need the leave. The legislation would allow wildland firefighters to take up to 24 months away from service without losing their retirement benefits, ensuring they can handle life’s challenges and return to work without being penalized. Rep. Harder introduced the bill alongside Rep. Scott Franklin (R-FL-18).
“Our wildland firefighters risk everything to keep our families safe, and yet our government refuses to let them take time off to see theirs. It’s totally unacceptable,” said Rep. Harder. “Our new bill gives firefighters the time they need to take care of their loved ones. It’s a common-sense fix that will keep our heroes in these incredibly important jobs.”
“Federal firefighters play a critical role in our nation’s emergency response network. They shouldn’t have to worry about losing their retirement benefits if they must take an extended absence to handle a family emergency or care for a new baby,” Congressman Franklin said. “Our bill extends break-in-service retirement limits from three days to 24 months, providing flexibility to support these brave men and women. It’s an important step to improve benefits, recruit, and retain wildland firefighters, and I’m glad to partner with Rep. Harder on this initiative.”
The bill is a crucial part of Rep. Harder’s four-pronged strategy to combat the wildfire crisis and retain highly skilled wildland firefighters. In September, Rep. Harder passed an amendment to provide critical resources and support to wildland firefighters and their families who experienced tragedies in the line of duty.
